But it is also worth remembering the rules for using a fireplace safely, which keep the fireplace heating system in good condition for decades. Ignoring these basic rules is dangerous: it can lead not only to a broken fireplace but to a fire in the house.

What are the basic safety rules for a wood-burning fireplace?

Here are the main safety rules for using a wood-burning fireplace insert at home:

Never alter the factory design of the fireplace insert.
Before lighting the fire, make sure the flue is in good order.
Use personal protective equipment — namely heat-resistant gloves.
Make sure the supply and extract ventilation in the room is working.
Remove flammable materials from around the insert.
Do not replace wood with other fuels, even if the manufacturer permits it.
Do not put the fire out with water — the wood should burn down on its own.

Why should the fire never be put out with water?

Because of thermal shock. Water poured onto a hot firebox cools the steel and the fireclay lining abruptly and unevenly, which can crack the lining and warp the body. A sudden cloud of steam in a closed chamber is dangerous in itself, and the ash and steam thrown into the room are unpleasant at best.

If you need to stop the fire, simply close the air supply and let the wood burn down. A properly built appliance goes out on its own within a reasonable time — that is exactly what the air regulator is for.

What must be checked before every heating season?

Before the first fire of the season, check the flue for soot and blockages, inspect the cap and the top of the chimney for debris or birds' nests, look over the sealing cords and the door glass, and clear the ash out of the firebox. It is also worth checking that furniture and anything else combustible is at a safe distance from the fireplace.
