The internal lining of a fireplace insert is not merely decorative trim. It performs several important functions at once: it protects the body of the insert from overheating, stabilises the temperature in the combustion chamber, affects how efficiently the wood burns and even how the fire looks.
The market offers three main lining materials: fireclay, vermiculite and cast iron. Each has its own properties, advantages and limitations. In this article we look at their characteristics and give examples from real models of fireplace inserts and stoves.
1. What is fireclay and why is it good?
Fireclay is a refractory ceramic made from high-melting clay with a high content of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and silicon dioxide (SiO2). It is used in blast furnaces, metallurgy and ceramic production — wherever maximum thermal resistance is required.
For fireplaces and stoves, fireclay boards can withstand temperatures above +1750 °C without losing strength or shape. That makes them ideal for intensive use.
Advantages of fireclay:
- High thermal resistance — fireclay withstands temperatures above 1500°C, which makes it ideal for fireplaces and stoves.
- Resistance to sudden temperature swings — it does not crack or deform when the temperature changes abruptly.
- Heat resistance — prolonged exposure to high temperatures does not cause loss of strength or failure.
- Low porosity — fireclay does not absorb moisture, which increases its durability and reduces the risk of damage from freezing water.
- Energy efficiency — it accumulates heat well and releases it gradually, reducing fuel consumption.
- Mechanical strength — it withstands significant physical loads without deforming.
Disadvantages:
- Considerable weight, which increases the load on the body of the insert.
- Difficulty in cutting and fitting the boards.
Fireclay with a proprietary design in SAVEN fireplaces and stoves
To protect the combustion chamber from overheating, the Ukrainian manufacturer SAVEN uses thick (35 mm) European fireclay in the SAVEN Energy, SAVEN Energy Up and SAVEN Balance insert series and in the SAVEN Vatra stoves. Fireclay is made from ground clay and fired in several stages. The result is an excellent fired material capable not only of storing heat but also of passing it on.
Fireclay can withstand temperatures up to +1200°C and — importantly — has increased resistance to temperature swings. It absorbs heat and holds it inside for a long time, extending the heat output of the insert.

2. What is vermiculite and where is it used?
Vermiculite is a natural mineral of the hydromica group which, when heated to 900–1000 °C, expands and becomes extremely light and porous. Vermiculite boards have low thermal conductivity, which makes it possible to keep the heat inside the combustion chamber effectively and reduce the heating of the insert walls.
The average working temperature is up to 1300–1350 °C, which is quite enough for most domestic fireplaces.
Advantages of vermiculite:
- Light — it significantly reduces the weight of the construction.
- Excellent thermal insulation — it keeps the temperature high in the burning zone.
- Simple installation and replacement of boards.
- Environmentally clean, with no toxic additives.
Disadvantages:
- Lower strength compared with fireclay — a board is easier to damage by impact.
- Gradual wear under prolonged, very intensive use.
SAVEN Into fireplace cassettes with vermiculite
SAVEN uses vermiculite in its Into series fireplace cassettes. Thanks to the vermiculite lining, these inserts reach working temperature quickly, burn wood economically and are ideal for seasonal or occasional use. 3. Why is cast iron good as a lining?
Cast iron is an alloy of iron and carbon (over 2%), known for its ability to accumulate heat and release it evenly. In fireplaces, cast iron can serve either as the material of the entire combustion chamber or as a lining.
Its working temperature usually does not exceed 1100–1200 °C, but its thermal inertia is enough to keep a room comfortable even after the fire has died down.
Advantages of cast iron:
- Excellent heat accumulation and even release.
- High strength and durability.
- Corrosion resistance with proper care.
- An attractive price compared with fireclay.
Disadvantages:
- Heavy — it needs a solid base or stand.
- It can crack under sudden overheating.
- Less flexibility in shapes and sizes.
KAWMET and MORSO cast iron inserts and stoves
The Polish brand KAWMET specialises in cast iron inserts and stoves. Cast iron models are known for their thermal inertia: after a long burn they can keep releasing heat for several more hours. An ideal choice for cottages and country houses where autonomy and minimal maintenance matter.

4. Combined lining: a balance between strength and insulation
A separate niche is occupied by fireplace inserts in which the lining uses a combination of different materials — for example fireclay and vermiculite, or cast iron and vermiculite. This approach takes the strong points of each material and minimises their drawbacks.
Advantages of a combined lining:
- Optimal thermal resistance — fireclay elements withstand the peak temperatures in the flame zone.
- Improved insulation — vermiculite in the less heated zones keeps the temperature regime stable.
- Reduced weight — thanks to the use of light boards.
- Even heat radiation — cast iron elements accumulate heat and go on releasing it after the fire has died down.
Disadvantages:
- More complex installation and fitting.
- The need for precise engineering calculation to avoid thermal deformation at the joints.
Conclusions and recommendations
Fireclay is the best choice for intensive daily use, large fireplaces and heating systems (SAVEN Energy, SAVEN Energy Up, SAVEN Vatra, SAVEN Balance).
Vermiculite is optimal for light constructions and fast warm-up, ideal for seasonal fireplaces (SAVEN Into).
Cast iron is an excellent option for those who value long heat retention and the classic look of a firebox (KAWMET and MORSO cast iron inserts and stoves).
